Bruce Lourie
Dr. Bruce Lourie is a best-selling author, policy expert, social entrepreneur, and award-winning global sustainability leader. He currently serves as the president of the Ivey Foundation, is a scholar-in-residence at McGill’s Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design, and is a Guest Lecturer at the Said Business School’s Social Finance Program at the University of Oxford. Dr. Lourie actively contributes to numerous boards of directors and advisory boards, including The Transition Accelerator and the Canadian Climate Institute.
Recognized as one of Canada’s most influential leaders and experts on climate change, Dr. Lourie has been instrumental in creating more than a dozen organizations that are critical to Canada’s transition to a net-zero economy. These include the Canadian Climate Institute, the Institute for Sustainable Finance, Farmers for Climate Solutions, Efficiency Canada, and The Transition Accelerator.
Dr. Lourie led North America’s largest climate action initiative by phasing out coal-fired electricity in Ontario and played a key role in establishing the Ontario Greenbelt. His achievements have been widely recognized, including receiving York University’s top alumni distinction, the Bryden Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2015, and a Rockefeller Bellagio Residency in 2021. He is also the co-author of two books, Toxin Toxout and Slow Death by Rubber Duck, the latter of which became an international bestseller.
Dr. Lourie holds a Ph.D. focused on the intersection of risk, science, and policy. In 2024, he was appointed to the Order of Canada in recognition of his lifelong commitment to sustainability and his entrepreneurial efforts in establishing numerous organizations dedicated to the environment and Canada’s transition to net-zero.
