David Runnalls is a Distinguished Fellow with the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD). He is a Senior Fellow at Smart Prosperity Institute and co founder of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) where he served as director of its London, England office from 1973 until 1981.
In 1988, Mr. Runnalls moved to Ottawa, Canada to help establish an environment program at the Institute for Research on Public Policy (IRPP). While at IRPP. From 1998 to 2010, David served as president of the IISD in Winnipeg, Canada.. IISD has offices in New York, Geneva and Ottawa in addition to its HQ in Manitoba
He is Chair of the Pembina Institute and has served on many non profit Boards and Advisory bodies to government and international organizations
